Cornucopia Ghost Town

Cornucopia boading house

When the gold mine shut down, the town of Cornucopia, including this boarding house, ceased to exist. During its day, Cornucopia serviced a number of local mines including the Union-Companion, Red Jacket, and Last Chance.

Records indicate that between 1880 and 1903, over 270,000 ounces of gold was taken from the mines, worth a million dollars then, over 100 million today. Production declined after 1905 and ceased by the 1940s.

Old ore tracks

The Cornucopia Lodge sits just across Pine Creek from the old town, where you can wander through a piece of Western history.

To the right are old rails used to guide ore carts bringing rocks from the mine. And you can see other sites such as an old mine entrance and the Baker County calaboose where the bad guys went if they tried to steal a little of that gold dust.
